โฆ Synopsis
A competitive technique employing the S 0 2 ( 3 B , ) photosensitized isomerization of cis-C2F2H2 to trans-C2FzH2 in the presence of selected fluorinated olefins has been used at 3712 d and 22ยฐC to determine the quenching rate constants of the reaction S02(aB~) + M 3 removal. With tJs0, = 23.4 torr and P , , , . c ~F ~H ~ = 0.239 torr Stern-Volmer plots for M =CZHP, CZHZF, I,l-C2F2H2, C2FP, and C3Fs yielded k , (units of 10' 0 l./mole . sec) values of 5.29 + 0.16, 4.21 f 0..53, 1.92 f 0.23, 0.
.575 f 0.060, and 0.0335 f 0.0027, respectively. The results were consistent with the ability of an olefin to quench S 0 2 ( 3 R , ) being inversely proportional to the polarizability of the olefin's z bond and the effect can be clearly noted as each H atom in C2H4 is individually replaced by an F atom.
