In this paper we define a quaternionic Cayley transform for some linear operators acting in H ร„ H, where H is a Hilbert space, which permits the joint investigation of the pairs of symmetric operators. In particular, this leads to new criteria for the existence of commuting self-adjoint extensions of certain pairs of symmetric operators.
