✦ Synopsis

we have analyzed metastable decompositions of nitrogen cluster ions, (Nz): , n< 50, produced in a supersonic beam with subsequent electron impact ionization. The dissociation probability, plotted versus the number of desordered N2 molecules, exhibits an oscillatory pattern. This is attributed to radiationless relaxation of vibrationally excited Nz molecules in the cluster. The number of molecules lost per quantum rapidly increases in the size range 20< n925, but attains a constant value, Ann4.7, above 25.
