Abstract

We provide a formalism for the polarization evolution in plug and play quantum key distribution systems, and adapt this formalism for the aggregate Faraday effect in fibers arising from an axial magnetic field. We show the implication of such field on detector readings, and offer a formal expression for quantum bit‐error rate (QBER) for these systems. Assuming a Maxwellian statistics for the Faraday angle, as predicted by recent analytical and numerical studies, we finally calculate the average QBER.
