✦ Synopsis
Experimental studies of the nonlinear evolution in time of planar second-sound pulses in superfluid 4He have been carried out a few milliKelvin below Tx. When thermal effects in the second-sound generator and detector are taken into consideration, the data can be quantitatively understood using Burgers' equation to describe sound propagation in the superfluid. A method for extracting the second-sound velocity and damping very near Tx, where nonlinear effects are always important, is described.
