disappoint most western geologists for few of our texts have less than a full chapter on plate tectonics, and many begin with it. Some will dismiss the contrast as the Soviet conservatism so many of us perceive. Yet at the same time it reflects an attitude that textbooks should reflect the long-established truths of a subject-just as for so long school texts in physics have looked back to Newton rather than to Einstein. We must of course. not forget that this is a translation of the 3rd Soviet edition of 1973-a contemporary edition mioJlt well show greater acceptance of the new global tectonics.
