Urinary vanillylmandclic acid, homovanillic acid, vanillic acid and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid were determined on silica gel layers by reflectance spectroscopy at 400 ,um. After development with the solvent system benzene-glacial acetic acidmethanol (70 :20 :zo) the plates were kept in diffuse daylight for two days to obtain yellow spots for the otherwise colourless substances. By this photochemical reaction aromatic carboxylic acids with (3-OCHs, 4-OH)-and (3-OH, 4-OH)-substitution and indole-3-acetic acids were detected. The lower limit of detection was about 0.05 pg.
