β¦ Synopsis
The leaves of Neurolaena lobata (L.) R.Br. are frequently used as a remedy against several diseases in Central America and the Caribbean area. Since sesquiterpene lactones have been found to be responsible for the different pharmacological activities of this plant, a rapid method for their qualitative and quantitative analysis was established for quality control. A high performance liquid chromatography method for the determination of the main sesquiterpene lactones found in N. lobata was developed and used for the analysis of two samples, collected at different flowering stages. Differences in the qualitative and quantitative content have been found and the implications of this for the medicinal use of the plant are discussed.
