✦ Synopsis
The toxic e †ects of heavy metals in stack gases from industrial furnaces were taken into account in the emission limits of the German law 17. BImschV (17. Bundes-Immissionsschutzgesetz-Verordnung) from November 23, 1990. Results of the Ðrst manual stack emission samplings are presented. During the sampling period a new active carbon packed-bed reactor was installed for further cleaning of the stack gases. A reduction by a factor of 10 for most elements was observed. Because of their resistance to hot (150 ÄC) and corrosive gases, quartz Ðbre Ðlters were used for sampling the emitted aerosols. The aerosol-loaded Ðlters were analysed using an X-lab XRFspectrometer (Spectro A.I.) calibrated with laboratory-developed standard Ðlters. In the future, a combined sampling and analysis system for continuous emission control, planned together with Spectro A.I.
