✦ Synopsis

Qualitative models play a double role in this framework: they are the subject of reasoning for determining the locally advantageous actions, and they are used for qualitative prediction of the system behaviour subject to these actions.

This approach allows the methods and tools of artificial intelligence to be integrated into process control systems, conserving the basic approach and system structure by using qualitative models and inference instead of conventional models and prediction for intelligent model-based control.

For advice generation a special method, called the extended qualitative simulation (EQSIM) algorithm, has been developed and is discussed in detail.

The method and a qualitative model-based advice generating system have been illustrated on the example of generating start-up advice for a pilot-plant distillation column with energy feedback.
