A genuinely non-perturbative evaluation of higher-twist contributions to the structure functions of the nucleon, with all mixing effects and renormalon ambiguities taken care of, is presented. Higher-twist corrections turn out to be significant at moderate values of q2.

β¦ Synopsis
We investigate the nucleon's twist-3 spin structure functions based on QCD. Explicit definitions of relevant twist-3 parton distributions are given as nucleon matrix elements of nonlocal light-cone operators, and their renormalization and the Q2-evolution are discussed. We show that the twist-3 parton distributions obey simple Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi (GLAP) evolution equations in the limit N~ --+ oo and give analytic formulae for the corresponding anomalous dimensions. The results are valid to O(1/N~) accuracy and will be useful in confronting with future experiments.
Here x is the Bjorken variable, z is a light-like vector z 2 = 0, and [PS) is the nucleon state with its momentum P and the spin S. Our Lorentz frame is chosen as P. z = P+z-. The
