✦ Synopsis

Al~traet--The thermal behaviour of polyacrylonitrile studied by DTA and TG is shown to be greatly influenced by the presence of various types of additive. Pure PAN exhibits a very sharp exotherm at about 260 °, caused by the oligomerization of nitrile groups. This reaction can be initiated at much lower temperatures by acidic and basic compounds and broad exotherms with much reduced differential temperatures are observed. Inorganic salts such as KCN,!NaSCN and Na2S also interact efficiently. An ionic mechanism is concluded for the additive catalysed reaction but, in the absence of additives, the reaction is shown to be free radical in nature.

AbstraetmThe thermal degradation of polyacrylonitrile has been studied using the techniques of thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis and thermal volatilization analysis. The influence of experimental conditions on the results is examined. The very sharp exothermic reaction below 300 ° is a

Acidic comonomers exert a strong initiating effect on the exothermic nitrile group oligomerization in polyacrylonitrile. In contrast to the sharp intense transitions for pure homopolymers, the exotherms for the copolymers are very broad with much reduced differential temperatures. This is explained

Al~tract--Thermai analysis of copolymers of acrylonitrile containing up to 20 per cent of acrylate and methaerylate units shows that these units exert a diluent effect on the exothermic nitrile group oligomerization without inhibiting the reaction. Thus these comonomers participate in the cyclizatio
