β¦ Synopsis
Based on the thermal processes which control the baking process of industrial carbons, (1) kinetic considerations regarding the characterization of binder pyrolysis are discussed, (2) qualitative and quantitative data on the distillation and pyrolysis processes were obtained by means of thermogravimetric and thermovolumetric measurements, (3) structural changes duringthe baking of defined products were characterized, and (4) equations for calculating the permissible heating rates have been developed. The transport through the porous material of the products formed during the decomposition of the binder determines the baking rate. From the kinetic considerations it was possible to divide the release of volatile products into the ranges of (a) distillation and (b) pyrolysis or dehydrogenation. The other measurements provided quantitative information on the flowing materials, and this together with consideration of the resulting flow paths led to the final equation. The calculated values were in agreement with practical experience and thus provide a guide for the optimization of the most time-consuming process in the production of technical carbons.
