✦ Synopsis
A pyrenebutyric acide fibre-optic chemical sensor based on fluorescence quenching was developed for the measurement of the serum concentration of metronidazole. A fluorescent membrane that was prepared by solvent casting from dioxane to incorporate pyrenebutyric acid into the polymer with plasticizer was used for the immobilized reagent phase of this optical sensor, obtaining limits of detection of 2.6 pg ml-' for metronidazole in rabbit serum. No pretreatment of the serum samples was required. The pharmacokinetic parameters for the proposed method were in good agreement with a liquid chromatographic method.
