✦ Synopsis

The life cycle of the cranefly Molophilus ater Meigen on an area of Pennine moorland in Britain is described. The later recruitment of females into the adult population is referable to a slightly longer period of larval development for females than for males, and not to any difference in the duration of the pupal stage. Significant relationships exist between larval weight and sex of pupae, and pupal weight and adult fecundity. Implications of these findings to the preparation of population budgets for the species are discussed.
