โฆ Synopsis
Three years of research at the Frankenthal and Halle locations of KSB Aktiengesellschaft have culminated in a novel pump/turbine unit. Thanks to an internal diffuser vane a d j u s t m e n t system, the unit can be used to o p e r a t e b o t h as a p u m p and a t u r b i n e w i t h u n c h a n g e d direction of flow.
This will help sewage treatment plant operators make good use of the out-going water's potential to generate electric p o w e r in dry w e a t h e r periods. At high w a t e r level conditions, the unit can be used to p u m p the storm w a t e r into the main outfalls.
Axial flow through the horizontally m o u n t e d m a c h i n e makes for the b e s t p o s s i b l e e n e r g y utilization, even if only low head is available in turbine operation. D e v e l o p m e n t of the n e w p r o d u c t was subsidised by the G e r m a n Federal Ministry for Research and Technology. Once the test rig measurements were c o m p l e t e d in Halle, a p r o t o t y p e was installed in a plant located KSB's combined pump/turbine with internal diffuser adjustment. near Heidelberg and tested successfully in turbine operation in
