✦ Synopsis

A strong contributory factor impacting the market for seals and sealing products is that of the changes within the world pumps industry. According to a companion report to this publication, the world pumps market has reached US$l9 billion per annum. This article provides an overview and market forecast for the sealing products serving this market. It looks at the world pump market and how it closely relates to that of sealing products. One key aspect has been the growing acceptance of seal-less pumps outside specialist applications and in the mainstream. At the same time, the ongoing diversi~cation of pumping technology is demanding comparable developments in sealing technology. Therefore the two sectors' synergistic mutual interdependence is increasing with each iteration of existing products, with all of the consequent new commercial opportunities. To a greater or lesser extent the interdependence of these sectors gives a good barometer of the general progress -or downturns -in the world marketplace.

Pump market indicators

This article overviews the marketplace for seals, gaskets and related products for applications in the pumping industry. The way that the pump industry fares is always a good indicator of the state of play of today's and tomorrow's sealing products market. Therefore it is instructive to look at one of the companion products in the EAT industrial engineeering products stable, rhe I+oj/e of &he International Pump Industry -Market Prospects to 2004. It follows neatly on from previous discussions of sealing product markets for Western Europe and North America as well as by product type to be found in Sealing Technology.

This study predicts that the world pump market (excluding spare parts) will have grown from US$13.9 billion in 1999 through US$14.2 billion in 2000, with a real increase of about 1.5% excluding inflation. The report estimates
