Small metal cluster ions have been generated by direct laser desorption of modified or "activated" surfaces. Activation is achieved through electrochemical roughening and laser roughening of polished metal surfaces, leading to enhanced signals for Cu: (n=2, 3), Ag: (n= 3, 5), and Au: (n=2, 3). These
