The products of the reaction of the hydroxyl (OH) radical with methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in NO,-air systems were identified and measured by Fourier transform infrared absorption spectroscopy and gas chromatography. The products observed, and their yields, were as follows: t-butyl formate, 76 ?

✦ Synopsis
UV spectra and kinetics for the reactions of alkyl and alkylperoxy radicals from methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) were studied in 1 atm of SF, by the pulse radiolysis-UV absorption technique. UV spectra for the radical mixtures were quantified from 215 to 340 nm. At 240 nm, a, = (2.6 f 0.4) X lo-l8 cm* molecule-' and uRo, = (4.1 f 0.6) X lo-'* cm* molecule-' (base e). The rate constant for the self-reaction of the alkyl radicals is (2.5 f 1.1) X lo-l1 cm3 molecule-' s-l. The rate constants for reaction of the alkyl radicals with molecular oxygen and the alkylperoxy radicals with NO and NO, are (9.1 f 1.5) X 10-13, (4.3 + 1.6) X lo-'* and (1.2 f 0.3) X lo-" cm3 molecule-' s-l, respectively. The rate constants given above refer to reaction at the tert-butyl side of the molecule.
