✦ Synopsis
It is showing using results from tight-binding calculations that the orthorhombic to tetragonal transition in the high-temperature superconductor La,_ ,Sr,CuO, has a simple orbital explanation, and one which is quite analogous electronically to the puckering of the Cu02 sheets in the YBa,Cu,O,m,j system. The difference in the behavior of the two is associated with the fact that the former contains six-. and the latter five-coordinate copper atoms. The results are based upon the variable electron occupation of the highest occupied band. The experimental resuks are only understandable ifthis is the x2--y' band rather than one based on an oxygen x-type orbital suggested by some to be important in the superconductingpropcrtics of these materials.
