Before the promise of electronic commerce will be realized, there must first be sufficient infrastructure in place to enable the deployment of useful, secure, electronic commerce applications.

Today, many companies are struggling with the complex technological and operational issues, which must be addressed in order to build and operate such an infrastructure. This article will provide a conceptual overview of one approach to providing a significant portion of this infrastructurecost-effectively -for a large class of business applications.

The availability of this infrastructure would allow corporations to focus their resources where their real returns on investment lie -on the development and deployment of E-commerce applicationsrather than on building the underlying infrastructure.
