manner. LaBenne and Greene (Eastern Michigan University) prepared separate chapters on a number of specific issues in which the implications of self are developed, including ability grouping, promotion practices, grading, discipline, and measurement. While Purkey is a valuable reading for teachers, LaBenne and Greene may be additionally useful in certain education courses.
The third edition of Gabriel's excellent account of personality development is highly appropriate for the use of undergraduate students, for self-understanding as well as in personality and teacher-training courses; it can also be read profitably by parents and teachers. Gabriel is a faculty member at the University of New South Wales; however, apart from some instances of characteristic "English" spelling, there is nothing parochial about his book. It reflects broad scholarship as well as a flair for communicating wit,h the non-technical reader that is much appreciated. This edition includes an expanded treatment of children's intellectual development and comments on education of children in relation to intellectual, social and emotional growth, as well as a number of new chapters reflecting a more detailed treatment of developmental stages. If there is one central theme, it might be Gabriel's view of education as "creative becoming," which is congruent with the Piagetian approach discussed above.
