โฆ Synopsis
Key concepts
Working through can be thought of as a three-phase process in which a person gradually changes some aspect of his/her mental functioning. These phases progress from:
โข Phase 1: lack of awareness of a problem or the cause of a problem, to
โข Phase 2: increased awareness of a problem and/or practicing new ways of functioning, to
โข Phase 3: lasting change in thought patterns or behavior These changes can occur in many aspects of a person's mental functioning, including ego function, sense of self, expectations of relationships with others, and super-ego functioning.
In psychodynamic psychotherapy, we expect that these changes happen slowly over time through a gradual process of working and reworking of the same issues until lasting change occurs.
