โฆ Synopsis
Empathy is the capacity to recognize and understand another's mental and emotional state. Sometimes we say that it is the ability to ''put oneself in another person's shoes.'' Empathic listening is listening to another person in order to understand how he/she is experiencing him/herself and his/her world.
Paying attention to our emotional responses to our patients is essential to listening empathically.
In psychodynamic psychotherapy, we oscillate between listening from the perspective of the patient and listening from our own perspective in order to best understand our patients.
