The hospital was called Tranquility Place, but Jean Shannon soon learned that this was a misnomer. During her interview with the director, Dr. Clifton Werner, Jean became somewhat unnerved by his urbane yet chilly manner, but she dismissed her queasiness in her desire to be able to work closely with the patients there. In her previous work at a large state mental hospital, Jean had not had the close contact with patients that she had hoped for, and so the idea of joining the staff of a small private mental hospital vastly appealed to her.
It took Jean only a few short days in her new post to realize that her initial fears had merit. First of all, the hospital staff was at odds with each other. Secondly, there were several patients who did not seem to belong in a mental hospital at all. Lastly, Dr. Ken Hastings - the handsome chief assistant to Dr. Werner - displayed a hostility toward the administration that belied a secret of his own.
But none of these things would deter Jean; she was determined to help each patient as best she could and to uncover the veil of mystery surrounding Tranquility Place.
