β¦ Synopsis
Objective: The purpose of this review is to highlight the prevalence of mental disorders in Australian nursing homes and to provoke discussion of the current inadequacy of mental health services in these facilities.
Method: Comparisons were made between mental health care in Australian and United States (US) nursing homes. Relevant literature was reviewed.
Results and Conclusions: In both US and Australian nursing homes, the prevalence of mental disorders is high, but there is under-recognition and under-treatment of these conditions. When adequately resourced, old age psychiatry services can have a beneficial impact on mental health care in nursing homes.
