โœฆ Synopsis

As an alternative to Wigner's spin-isospin symmetry, known to be broken in heavier nuclei, a pseudo SU(4) symmetry is proposed which follows from the combined invarianee in pseudo spin and isospin. Its consequences with regard to Gamow-Teller fl decay are pointed out.

We found a classification scheme for the states of superdeformed shells which is based upon a new realization of the group SU(3). This is achieved by expressing the generators of SU(3) in terms of boson operators. In contrast to Elliott's SU(3) case, this new SU(3) scheme has the dual nature of SU(3

We show that a nearly perfect SU(3) symmetry emerges from an extended projected shell model. Starting from a deformed potential we construct separate bases for neutron and proton collective rotational states by exact angular momentum projection. These rotational states are then coupled by diagonaliz
