✦ Synopsis

The technique of McMillan-Rowell tunneling spectroscopy, extended by a method of proximity junctions to poorly oxidizing materials, is applied to study electron-phonon coupling in Nbl-xZrx at x= 0.25, correspeonding to the maximum Tc in the Nb-Zr alloy system. The resulting a F(to) function provides A = 1.3 for the alloy, and indicates that the primary benefit to superconductivity upon alloying arises from softening of the effective phonon spectrum.
