✦ Synopsis

High-resolution proton spectra of acridine and the five monomethyl derivatives have been analyzed using multiple resonance and computer techniques. It was possible to determine the magnitudes and relative signs of the inter-ring coupling constants between H-C( 9) and all the protons of the adjacent rings. Positive signs have been obtained for 5Jz9 and 5J49, negative signs for *JI9 and EJ,,. The coupling constants are discussed in terms of 0-and n-contributions and as a function of the geometry of the pathway.

THE 60 MHz proton spectrum of acridine has been analyzed by Kokko and Goldsteinl and by Mantsch, Seiffert and Zanker.2 These authors treated the 9-spin-system as two identical four-spin ABCD-systcnis and introduced interactions of H-C( 1) and H-C

## Abstract Modifications (CSEc and CSEh) of recently published SQSQc and SQSQh pulse sequences are proposed and tested on detection of small (∼2 Hz) signed silicon–carbon coupling constants. The new sequences increase signal intensity by simplifying the spectra. The signals are about four times st
