β¦ Synopsis
This paper contains a detailed account of the improved apparatus used at the Bureau in making measurements of radiant energy, to a wave-length of II microns, emitted by explosions in the cylinder of a small L-head engine running on benzole and on blends of benzole with gasoline.
Observations, made through five selective filters, are recorded: Normal and knocking engine flames; blast-torch flames of liquid fuels ; blowpipe flames of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and city gas ; the flame of gasoline burning on a wick; and a small black-body furnace heated to temperatures between 800' and 1,400' K.
For engine flames the results are presented in curves of dR/dt against crank angle, where R is the total radiation received by the measuring thermocouple up to time t from the beginning of an average cycle.
A table is also included, giving the relative amounts of energy transmitted by the several filters from the various sources of radiation.
