## Abstract Sol–gel films on austenitic stainless steel (AISI 316L) polished wafer were prepared from sono‐sols obtained from tetraethylorthosilane and hydrated calcium nitrate. However, pitting was observed in different places on the stainless steel surfaces. The corrosion resistance was evaluated
