β¦ Synopsis
A characteristic red-violet chromophore which forms in the reaction of cupric ion with p-sulfhydryl-a-amino acids has been attributed by several authors to a mixed-vaIence Cu, L, structure. We have isolated and examined the analogous chromophore of the chelating drug penicitlamine #,@-climethyIcysteine), finding instead a poiymeric anion with a mixed vaIence Cu,L, repeaticg unit_ Direct evidence for a mixed valence polymer cooroborates earlier conclusions of Wilson and Martin [9]_ Under oxygen-free conditions the anionic complex forms in essentially quantitative yield according to the following reaction:

## Abstract We have shown previously that iodosylbenzeneβiron(III) porphyrin intermediates (2) are generated in the reactions of oxoiron(IV) porphyrin Οβcation radicals (1) and iodobenzene (PhI), that 1 and 2 are at equilibrium in the presence of PhI, and that the epoxidation of olefins by 2 afford
The crystal structures of three new [Cu(bipy) , 2, and [I] 2 , 3, have been determined at room temperature by single crystal X-ray analysis. All three complexes involve a CuN 4 O 2 chromophore, with an asymmetric cis-distorted octahedral (CDO) stereochemistry. The stereochemistries of 1, 2 and 3, a
