Abstract
A smooth pseudoatom potential is derived from the Shaw model potential for simple metals. The screening by a homogeneous conduction electron density yields nearly the same results as the selfβconsistent screening. The minimum perturbation in terms of phase shifts is investigated. The pseudoatom is compared with the Mattheiss potential and with the renormalized atom via the logarithmic derivatives.
