✦ Synopsis


Inorganic cement formulations have been adopted as encapsulation matrices for Intermediate Level Wastes arising at the Sellafield reprocessing plant. An extensive product evaluation programme has been carried out to produce data on the properties of encapsulated wastes. The results from these studies show the mechanical and chemical properties of cement systems are dominated by the interactions with the non-radioactive components of the wastestreams. By controlling these interactions it has been possible to produce wasteforms that satisfy processing, storage and potential disposal requirements.
