✦ Synopsis
Vieille' employed a fulminate detonator to produce shock waves in a tube I .27m . i n length and 22m . m 2 in diameter . The speed of the wave was measured by means of small pistons at each end of the tube, and the movements of these were recorded on a revolving smoked drum . Experiments were made with air, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide at atmospheric pressure and at elevated and reduced pressures . Vieille concluded from the experiments that for these wavesi . At the same pressure, the law of densities' relative to r V = J K P , where V = velocity of sound at a given temperature, P K = C , P = pressure, and p = density of the gaseous medium .
