β¦ Synopsis
A group of experts met in Amsterdam, in March 1994, with the support of the government of the Netherlands, to draft a comprehensive document entitled "Principles of the Rights of Patients in Europe." This document was intended to guide the appropriate European governing or regulating institutions, especially during healthcare reform. This core document, with supporting papers and essays, including the background study of H.J.J. Leenen, have been published in book form promoting the process initiated by the consultation in Amsterdam. Because of its location and the number of Dutch participants, the book and statement of principles has a noticeable Dutch influence. The Netherlands took the lead in this area and passed a civil law in 1995, specifying many of these fights in legislation, which is what the publication of this book intends to stimulate.
Because the book is a publication of the proceedings of a conference, it suffers from unavoidable repetition and lack of coherence, that a single author or editor would more easily overcome. Some persistence is needed to understand the direction of the book; but if one
