In the title compound [systematic name: 3-(phenothiazin-10-yl)propanaminium 2,4,6-trinitrophenolate], C~17~H~21~N~2~S^+^·C~6~H~2~N~3~O~7~
^−^, the dihedral angle between the two outer aromatic rings of the phenothiazine unit is 37.76 (6)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by N—H...O hydrogen bonds and several weak C—H...O contacts.

The H atoms were geometrically placed (C-H = 0.93-0.98 Å, N-H = 0.91 Å) and refined as riding with U iso (H) = 1.2U eq (carrier) or 1.5U eq (methyl C). The methyl groups were allowed to rotate, but not to tip, to best fit the electron density.
