✦ Synopsis
When the Nobel prize winner Hermann Staudinger founded the journal Die Makromolekulare Chemie in 1943, nobody could have imagined that about 60 years later, due to great technical progress, reading the online version of an article would be as normal as reading the print edition.
Over the years there have been many changes and additions to the original journal: there are now six Macromolecular journals offering various article formats and dealing with particular areas of polymer science, such as materials, theory and simulations, and bioscience. However, there have not only been changes in content but also a large number of technical developments.
The increasing accessibility of the World Wide Web has influenced habits with respect to scientific publicationsirrespective of whether one is a reader, an author, or a publisher. The availability of an online version of important scientific journals is widely accepted as the norm, and authors want to utilize the new possibilities when publishing their research results. Worldwide more and more people read the Macromolecular journals online; within 18 months the number of full-article downloads has doubled. Everyone, not only the subscribers, can receive the Table of Contents of the issues by e-mail when it is published (''Content Alerts''), and one can also receive automatically thematic information about titles and authors of current articles (''Profiled Alerts'').
