β¦ Synopsis
A to be associated with prognosis in cancer of the breast. In a recent paper, Goldenberg et al.14 summarized the relationship of patient survival to age, menopausal status, location and size of the tumor, axillary involvement, and treatment method. Black and his associates 2-51 8 have investigated the association between survival and certain structural characteristics of the tumor and the lymph nodes.
The study of Goldenberg et al?4 was based on the records of 1,458 women with histologically proved adenocardnoma of the breast diagnosed and treated at the YaleNew Haven Medical Center, New Haven, Conn., from 1921 through 1957. The principal findings were:
- Survival was low in young patients, increased to the time of menopause, and gradually decreased from age 45 onward. At least part of the decrease with advancing age was due to increasing mortality from causes other than breast cancer.
2. Little difference in survival was found
among women 45 to 55 years of age at diagnosis, irrespective of menstrual status.
-
Survival was higher among patients with tumors in the outer*i$uadrants of the breast as contrasted to patients with tumors in the inner quadrants, whether or not there was microscopic evidence of metastases to the axillary lymph nodes.
-
Survival was higher among patients with small tumors in contrast to those with large From the Biometry Branch, National Cancer Institute, of the National Institutes of H d t h . Public
