✦ Synopsis

As the only two members of staff at the University of Surrey, where Patrick came as Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive in 1994, to have also been with him in the Civil Engineering Department at Imperial College, it is a particular honour to be writing this Preface. This special issue of the Journal of Constructional Steel Research is the proceedings of a Symposium held on the 23rd and 24th June 2005 in honour of Patrick's retirement from the University. It is also extremely appropriate that this special issue should be published in the Journal that Patrick founded in September 1980 and is now in its 26th anniversary year and 62nd volume.
