Marine biology and Coral Reef Research and, indeed the whole of tropicaI Marine Science have sustained an immense loss from the premature death on April 22, 1970 of Thomas Fritz Goreau, Professor of Marine Science a t the University of the West Indies and the State University of New York a t Stonybrook. Tom Goreau was born in Berlin on the 16th August, 1924 and grew UP in Munich. In the course of the fateful political developments in the early 1930's' his family left Germany and emigrated to the United States, where his father, Fritz Goro, made a name for himself as a science photographer on the staff of Life Magazine. Tom Goreau completed his secondary education in New York and graduated with a B. A. degree from Clark University in 1946 and received a M. SC. degree from the Yale University in 1947. I n the same year he became Assistant Oceanographer a t the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and joined the US Navy Resurvey Expedition, whose object was to study the after-effects of atomic radiation on reef life. It was this event which inspired the young Goreau finally towards Marine Biology. He abtained his Ph. D. degree under G. A. HUTCHIN-
