On this occasion his friends organized an informal get-together during which he received the manuscripts of the papers constituting this special issue of J. Electroanalytical Chemistry and Interfacial Electro- chemistry. This represents the response of his colleagues to Overbeek's stimulating leadership and councillorship both within and beyond the field of science.
Overbeek was born in 1911 in Groningen, Netherlands. He studied chemistry at the University of Utrecht, a period during which he showed early distinction by his original and perceptive approach to scientific problems.
