โœฆ Synopsis

Professor A.S. Lodge's Contributions to Rheology and the University of Wisconsin

My first contact with Arthur Lodge was in 1964, when I was asked by the Journal of the American Chemical Society to write a review of his book "Elastic Liquids " (1964). This book made a very profound impression on me, because it showed for the first time how the field of rheology could be organized and how the various topics could be interrelated. It was also clear that he had a concern for all aspects of the subject: continuum mechanics, molecular theories, and rheometric measurements. "Elastic Liquids" did for the field of rheology what Paul Flory's "Principles of Polymer Chemistry" did for the field of polymer chemistry.

Having read Arthur's carefully written book, I made arrangements for him to come to the University of Wisconsin the following year as a visiting professor. His visit proved to be an extremely catalytic one, since he was able to bring about interactions among the rheologists on the U.

Professor T.C. Papanastasiou's contributions to rheology and computational fluid mechanics are numerous and have a lasting effect. In the short span of a professional career of about 10 years, and in such diverse places as the University of Minnesota, the University of Michigan, and the Aristotle Un
