โฆ Synopsis
The problems of designing advanced production systems are considered from the viewpoints of two quite different social systems and found to be similar. The problems are characterized as being large, complex, and dynamic. Simulation is found to be a good general methodological approach, and directed graphs a particularly useful means of specifying production problem relationships for both analysis and simulation. The Appendices contain discussions of the computer systems, both based on directed graphs, in use in these countries.

A graph theoretic approach is described for the design of multivariable control for large systems as an alternative to geometric methods. An example is given for a distillation column to demonstrate the technique, with a particular reference to aspects of disturbance rejection and the possibilities
The paper explores the implementation of rule-based patterndirected inference systems on parallel computers. The paper discusses one of these approaches in detail, the use of a graphreduction machine such as ALICE. The technique is illustrated through two example domains: automobile fault diagnosis
Fault diagnosis is the problem of determining the root causes of process upsets. This paper presents a very efficient method of identifying the possible causes of process disturbances using the signed directed graph (digraph) representation of process interactions. The analysis is based on forming l
