Cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae were immobilized in K-Carrageenan. Addition of sodium sulfite to the fermentation medium up to four percent led to glycerol yields of 25 to 27 g/l at temperatures below 31 ~ These results demonstrate that it is possible to direct the metabolism of immobilized cells

Columnar reactors containing immobilized cells of Zymomonas mobilis were utilized for the continuous production of ethanol from glucose. Two different immobilization strategies were investigated. In one case, cells were entrapped in borosilicate glass fiber pads, while in the other, cells were immo
