✦ Synopsis

An investigation has been carried out into the production of spheroidal graphite aluminium cast iron, which was found to be affected by the melting technique and the inoculation treatments. These vital factors were evaluated in this study, thereby establishing a unique melting procedure together with an inoculation technique. As a result, it is possible to obtain a carbide-free pearlitic matrix including a high nodule count with a greater degree of nodularity. The results also show that the solidification characteristics of the Fe-C-A1 alloy system are more complicated than those of the silicon-bearing system. Therefore, special attention is necessary to produce spheroidal graphite aluminium cast iron.
