Twenty-four Wistar rats were subjected to three types of stress, four hours a day, four days per week, for a period of thirty-five weeks in an attempt to produce hypertensive rats which could be utilized in the investigation of antihypertensive compounds. T h e blood pressures of the stress animals gradually increased reaching a maximum mean of 152 mm. Hg for males, at the end of the twenty-second week, and 1 5 1 mm. Hg for females, at the end of the twenty-eighth week. Fifteen rats (8 males and 7 females) died before the study was terminated with the greatest number of fatalities occurring between the twelfth and eighteenth week.
