✦ Synopsis

Chlorophyll-a concentration, algal biomass and photosynthetic activity decrease with increasing sediment depth. Chlorophyll-a and biomass minima were found a t the sediment surface on several occasions. This may be due to the removal of algae by wave action or vertical migrations of the algag in the sediment. By comparing stations with different degrees of exposure it was shown that wave action affects the size of the benthic popuIations. The epipsammic microphytobenthos is an important primary producer in the littoral zone of Lake Mikolajskie.

## Abstract Eight lakes located in the southern half of Saskatchewan were sampled in May and June, 1987, to determine the concentration and spatial distribution of mercury in their surface sediments. Katepwa and Buffalo Pound lakes had maximum total mercury sediment concentrations of 0.158 and 0.10

During the Holocene the volcano Hekla explosively emitted highly silicic tephra on four occasions. The ash was widely dispersed by the wind. Distinctive light-coloured ash layers are now to be seen in the peats of Northern Iceland. Ash from the 1 104 AD eruption was carried as far as Scandinavia. Th

Alkylphenol polyethoxylates are a major class of nonionic surfactants that are microbially degraded in sewage treatment plants (STPs) and sediments to more toxic and hydrophobic alkylphenols. Recent data on the estrogenic activity of alkylphenols has prompted interest in the distribution of these co
