✦ Synopsis

Recent advances in the processing of bulk, single grain (RE)BCO high temperature superconductors (HTS) fabricated by top seeded melt growth (TSMG) are described, including the refinement of (RE) 2 BaCuO 5 (RE-211) second phase inclusions in the bulk superconducting (RE)Ba 2 Cu 3 O 7Àd (RE-123) matrix by mechanical milling, the generation of new nano-scale pinning centres based on the Y 2 Ba 4 CuMO y phase ( 2411), where M = [Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Re, Zr, Hf], and the creation of MILD pinning sites by heavy ion irradiation. Details of a practical melt processing technique for the fabrication of light rare earth (LRE) bulk materials in air, in particular, based on the development of a generic seed crystal are described. Record J c 's have been reported for GdBCO and (NEG)BCO, and trapped fields as high as 3 T and 17 T have been achieved in bulk (RE)BCO grains at 77 and 29 K. Techniques employed to characterise bulk materials, such as Hall probe mapping, magnetoscan and EBSD are outlined. Finally, details of emerging applications of single grain (RE)BCO materials in motors and generators, magnetic bearings, flywheels and trapped flux devices are described.

Melt-processed REBaCuO (RE: rare-earth) superconductors have a high J c at 77 K and high magnetic field, and light rare-earth (LRE) BaCuO has a larger J c than Y123 in high magnetic field. These materials are expected to be applied to high field applications such as a superconducting permanent magne

Large single grains of Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) bulk superconductor of up to 32 mm in diameter have been fabricated by a seeded infiltration and growth (IG) technique. Small Y 2 BaCuO 5 (Y-211) particles are observed in the seeded IG sample microstructure, albeit with a rather inhomogeneous distribution in

This paper describes the numerical and experimental superconducting levitation forces of a single-grained Y-Ba-Cu-0 bulk superconductor of approximately 48 mm in diameter. The experimental levitation forces were measured by changing the magnet radius systematically. It was found experimentally that
