โฆ Synopsis
Privatization of the UK CAD Centre is to be investigated by the Department of Industry. Kenneth Baker, Minister for Information Technology, wants the Centre to operate as a fully commercial operation. Currently half of the CAD Centre's annual expenditure is recouped from sales of its services and products, which include PDMS, GNC, GINO and over 30 other software packages. The Centre employs about 150 people, mostly on contract from ICL, and spends about f.4 M per annum. The Centre has marketing agreements for its products with a number of companies, including Compeda, owned by the National Research Development Corporation.
Mr Baker wants to keep the CAD Centre group together. At the opening of CAD82 in Brighton he stated that the interests of UK suppliers and users would be considered in any sale. 'My intention is not to cut off any such companies from this source of basic knowledge and know-how. I am therefore keen to hear from UK companies of any statement of interest which they may have.'
